Overview:

An elective in Public Health and Preventive Medicine offers the student exposure to a large variety of interesting population health issues.  Under the supervision of a variety of public health professionals, the student will have the opportunity to consider public health problems in several clinical settings that may include sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis and travel medicine.  Students may participate in site visits such as housing and restaurant inspections.  They will have the opportunity to meet with public health experts to discuss issues within the various pillars of public health.  The student will be expected to complete a scholarly project and presentation within the time allotted for the elective.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this elective, the student will:

  • Describe the impact of social determinants on the health of various populations/sub-populations
  • Recognize the role of public health in the health care system
  • Define the role of public health physicians in Canada
  • Practice hypothetical investigation of communicable disease occurrence, outbreak or environmental hazard
  • Apply knowledge and experience gained in this rotation to a public health issue in the form of a scholarly project

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Undergraduate medical students in Canadian institutions
  • For students from 3 or 4 year programs, completion of a minimum of one year of medical school, prior to the requested date of elective
  • Submission of requests for elective (Internal University of Alberta Students) at least 3 months before the requested elective date

ELECTIVE REQUESTS CANNOT BE RESPONDED TO UNTIL JUNE 1**

Submission of requests for elective (External Applications) at least 6 months before the requested elective date

Access to a vehicle is recommended for the duration of this rotation, however if not possible, please advise at time of booking to aid in alternate scheduling arrangements

Priority Policy:  In order to utilize all available elective times, priority will be given to earlier applications.  Students are to apply as early as possible.  When more than 1 student applies at the same time for the same elective period, medical students in the University of Alberta Medicine Program will be given priority over students applying from other centres in Canada
