Overview:

This 2 - 4 week elective in Public Health & Preventive Medicine follows up on the learning achieved in their PHPM 101 elective at University of Alberta or a similar elective at a different university. During this elective, students will consolidate their understanding of core public health principles and frameworks to work on a project determined in discussion with a Public Health & Preventive Medicine supervisor. Opportunities may be available to meet certain stakeholders and experts relevant to their project to promote collaboration, communication on, and engagement with the project. Students are expected to participate in weekly academic half-day sessions with Public Health & Preventive Medicine residents. Students will also present their project to residents and staff during the Academic Half Day of their final week.

Objectives:

Completing this elective should:

  • Increase understanding of the role and methods of Public Health and Preventative Medicine on one or more specific health issues of significant population burden
  • Increase depth and breadth or understanding of the determinants of health on one or more specific populations
  • Apply Public Health and Preventative Medicine knowledge to one or more health issues of interest through a dedicated project

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Undergraduate medical students in Canadian institutions who have completed 2-4 weeks of an introductory/general Public Health and Preventative Medicine elective at a Canadian Institution
  • For medical students from 3 or 4 year programs, completion of a minimum of one year of medical school, prior to the requested date of elective
  • Submission of requests for elective (Internal University of Alberta students) at least 3 months before the requested elective date
  • Submission of requests for elective (External Application) at least 6 months before the requested elective date
Access to a vehicle is recommended for the duration of this rotation, however if not possible, please advise at time of booking to aid in alternate scheduling arrangements.


Priority Policy: In order to utilize all available elective times, priority will be given to earlier applications. Students are to apply as early as possible. When more than 1 student applies at the same time for the same elective period, medical students in the University of Alberta Medicine Program will be given priority over students from other centres in Canada.
