Overview:

During the PCHT experience, the student will demonstrate the ability to integrate within a health care team in the management of patients requiring admissions to hospital.
The student shall participate in active management of the medical issues and engage with the patient and family regularly of the overall plan of care.
Objectives:

Specific skills to be demonstrated:

  • Explain the criteria of admission
  • Assess the need for immediate measures to stabilize the patient
  • List any important potential complications
  • Perform appropriate examination specific to the presenting problem
  • Perform investigative and therapeutic procedures
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare team, patient and family
Additional Notes:

 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Undergraduate medical students in Canadian institutions
  • For students from 4-year programs, completion of a minimum of three years of medical school, prior to the requested date of elective
  • For students from 3-year programs, completion of a minimum of two years of medical school, prior to the requested date of elective
  • Submission of requests for elective (internal University of Alberta students) at least 3 months before the requested elective date.
Submission of requests for elective (External Applications) at least 6 weeks
