Overview:

The students will join the multidisciplinary treatment team of the Day Treatment Program. This program uses an intensive group psychotherapy format to treat patients with personality disorders and other psychiatric disorders. The student will observe group therapy sessions, family interviews and individual patient assessments.

Objectives:

Completing this elective should enable you to:

  • Experience in-depth psychodynamic assessment of psychiatric patients,
  • Understand the goals and techniques of treating patients with personality disorders and concomitant affective disorders, anxiety disorder, substance abuse disorders and other related disorders
  • Gain an understanding of intensive psychotherapy by observing and learning from experienced therapists
  • Learn about the impact of milieu on treatment outcome and
  • Learn about group psychotherapy and group functioning
Additional Notes:

Unique opportunity to watch ongoing psychotherapy as it is being performed, and to join a multidisciplinary team involved in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

No prerequisites necessary, but it is preferred that medical students have completed their student intern rotation in psychiatry.

Business casual apparel.

Visiting Students: Netcare are not required for this elective.
