Overview: The Clinic is a busy outpatient setting. Up to 12 new patients are assessed in a given day by nonmedical therapists. There is an emphasis on psychodynamic assessment and treatment, as well as outpatient medication management. There may be opportunity to observe psychodynamic group psychotherapy. Contact with psychiatrists is generally limited to twice daily Rounds.

No prerequisites necessary, but it is preferred that medical students have completed their student intern rotation in psychiatry.

Knowledge to Gain: psychodynamic orientation; outpatient medication treatment; group psychotherapy.

Skills to Acquire: psychiatric interviewing; prescribing medication.

Attitudes to Learn: psychodynamic stance in patient care.

Visiting Students: NETCARE ACCESS REQUIRED FOR THIS ELECTIVE:

Students MUST request access for Netcare A MINIMUM OF 6 WEEKS before the elective start date. Students who do not place this request before the 6 week deadline will not be granted access. Once visiting students have applied through the AFMC Student Portal and their elective is confirmed, a confirmation email will automatically be generated with further instructions and the online training link for Netcare and/or eClinician.
