Overview:

The student works with the Department of Family Medicine to arrange an elective experience, which will broaden their exposure to Family Medicine with practitioners who have an interest in Reproductive Health, Breastfeeding and Infant Nutrition Care.

Objectives:

This is a 2-week elective open to 3rd and 4th year medical students. This elective is ideal for those students who want to see the breadth of Family medicine and develop their clinical skills.

In this elective, students will work with a family physician who also holds a designation as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) who has additional interest and expertise in Women’s Health & Breast & Infant Feeding. Students will also have the unique experience to work not only on an interdisciplinary care team but in a technology forward clinic. The focus on this elective is to expose learners to both normal and abnormal patient presentations so they can better serve their general family practice.  Although these experiences are opportunistic and not guaranteed, medical students could expect to see the following:

  • Contraceptive/fertility counseling
  • IUD insertions/removals
  • Endometrial biopsies
  • Vulva and vaginal health
  • Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases
  • Post natal and 4th trimester care
  • Breast & infant feeding medicine - normal & pathology
  • Infant care & milestone development
  • Lactation medicine
  • Non binary families
  • Perinatal mood disorders
  • Interdisciplinary health care collaboration
  • Technology and innovation in primary care

In addition, students might have opportunities to also see full-scope family practice.
