Overview:

This two week elective in Subspecialty Gynecology will allow students to experience working in Edmonton with a variety of gynecologic subspecialists. Students will have the opportunity to rotate through Gynecologic Oncology, Urogynecology, including clinics and surgeries at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Cross Cancer Institute, the tertiary level referral centers for Northern and Central Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Eastern British Columbia and Western Saskatchewan. Students will also have the opportunity to attend weekly rounds, teaching and academic half-days.

Objectives:

Medical students will gain exposure to:

  1. The subspecialty of Gynecologic Oncology through a mix of ambulatory clinics, outpatient chemotherapy, colopscopy and surgeries in order to familiarize themselves with the diagnosis and management of known or suspected gynecologic malignancies.
  2. The subspecialty of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery including the clinical assessment, medical and surgical treatment of incontinence and genital prolapse.
Additional Notes:
  • Electives will be limited due to consideration of core rotation students from the University of Alberta
  • Electives are limited to Canadian students with a special interest in Obstetrics and Gynecology
