Overview: The Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta is a national leader in the field of surgical education. The purpose of this elective is to give medical students the opportunity to develop additional skills in education, and to provide them with training and experience in the application of online technology to teach medical students about surgery.

This elective gives medical students the opportunity to develop additional skills in education and to provide them with training and experience in the application of online technology to teach medical students about surgery. 

The goal of this course is to foster discussion and encourage students to explore and apply methods of instructional and curriculum design in relation to online teaching and learning.
Objectives:

The assigned readings, online learning and hands on sessions, will help students:

1. (KNOWLEDGE) Explain basic principles of instructional and curriculum design including:

  • The value of planning, considerations and evaluations of curriculum design,
  • The definition of elearning, instructional design models and instructional design theories


2. (SKILLS) Build skills and develop practical strategies for creating online learning materials. After completing this elective, students will be able to:

  • Write effective learning objectives,
  • Design podcasts, videos and other learning materials,
  • Apply relevant student engagement strategies
  • Design and management of online learning resources,
  • Use podcasting software to create a podcast on a surgical education topic,
  • Use video editing software to develop online materials

(ATTITUDES & SKILLS) Use critical thinking to apply knowledge and skills gained in the elective to their own teachings and learnings.

Additional Notes:

Along with the application, send us a basic outline of the topics you wish to cover during your elective and how you would like to deliver them (eg. podcast, video, virtual patient). We will then work with you to develop outline scripts and a work plan for your elective so that you will be ready to start production on the first day of your elective. We may also assign a local faculty member to serve as a content expert to assist with the production and review process.
