Elective Years 3 and 4: Thoracic Surgery

| Overview: | Students will be assigned to a preceptor at the RAH and will have an opportunity to work with the entire Thoracic Sx team. Students will get exposure to rounds, clinic, wards, consults, and the OR for cases relating to trauma, the pleural cavity, esophagus, pulmonary system, chest wall, and mediastinum. Teaching is delivered by the entire team as time allows. |
| Objectives: |
Students should be able to assess, diagnose and treat patients with chest injuries, dysphagia, heartburn/reflux, hemoptysis, respiratory diseases and abnormal chest x-rays. Students will learn about chest trauma, pneumothorax and hemothorax, pleural effusion, empyema, esophageal cancer, lung cancer, GERD, solitary pulmonary nodules and mediastinal tumors. Students should leave their elective with the skills to identify a solitary pulmonary nodule on a chest x-ray, do the correct technique for a tube thoracostomy, assess and manage blunt and penetrating chest trauma, and evaluate and manage hemoptysis and stridor. |
| Additional Notes: | Visiting Students: NETCARE ACCESS REQUIRED FOR THIS ELECTIVE: Students MUST request access for Netcare A MINIMUM OF 6 WEEKS before the elective start date. Students who do not place this request before the 6 week deadline will not be granted access. Once visiting students have applied through the AFMC Student Portal and their elective is confirmed, a confirmation email will automatically be generated with further instructions and the online training link for Netcare. |
