Overview: The student works with the Department of Family Medicine to arrange an elective experience which will broaden their exposure to family medicine.
Objectives:

To allow students to better understand and demonstrate their knowledge of family practice in an urban setting including:

  • The breadth of diagnoses and management of conditions seen in Family Medicine.
  • The advantages of providing comprehensive, continuing care versus episodic care.
  • The impact of biopsychosocial factors into the provision of effective medical care.
  • The use of remote visits (e.g. virtual/webcam, telephone) as an adjunct to, but not replacement for, in-person care.
  • The appropriate, judicious use of community resources to enhance patient care (e.g. lab/diagnostic imaging services, counseling/social services, Primary Care Network resources, etc).
  • When available, the variety of procedures commonly done by Family Physicians (IUD/Nexplanon insertion, skin biopsies, etc).
