The MD Program at the University of Alberta strives to create a learning environment where every individual is a valued and respected member of our educational community. In order to develop diverse, competent and compassionate physician leaders, we actively promote, support, and value the academic, physical, and mental well-being of students.
Supports and resources are diverse, and are available within the MD Program, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and, more broadly, within the University of Alberta community and the greater Edmonton area.The following is a curated list of resources that may be useful in providing academic, physical, and mental health support for our students:
MD Program Resources
- MD Program Academic Affairs - Academic Support, including academic advising, professionalism, accommodations, leaves of absence.
- MeDMAP Mentor Program - One-on-one meetings between students and a Faculty member to review academic performance, provide support.
Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry Resources
- Office of Advocacy & Wellbeing - Student support, in-house psychologist, psychoeducational testing, career advising.
- Medical Student Association (MSA) Peer Support Program - One-on-one meetings with Year 2-4 medical students to provide academic, mental health or social support from peers who understand the stressors of medical school (needs link)Indigenous Health Initiative Program- Supports innovative opportunities for Indigenous students, researchers and broader communities to advance Indigenous health

- First People's House - Support and services for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit student community on campus
- Student OmbudService - Confidential service offering support to deal with academic, discipline, interpersonal, and financial issues.
- University Wellness Services - Health services available to all staff members, students, and spouses and children of students.
- Fitness & Lifestyle Centre - Fitness facilities for students.
- Campus & Community Recreation - Recreation programs for students.
- Counselling & Clinical Services - Counselling services for students experiencing mental health or illness challenges to assist them to function successfully during their University experience.
- Sexual Assault Centre - Drop-in crisis intervention support to survivors of sexual violence and their supporters, as well as comprehensive educational workshops for the campus community.
- Interfaith Chaplains Association - Spiritual guidance, care, and support to any student.

- Office of Provost and Vice-President (Academic) - Leads the academic mission of the University.

- Alberta Medical Association's Physician and Family Support Program (PFSP) - Promotes health and well-being of medical students, residents and physicians of Alberta by providing confidential support and help with personal health issues. Available to students through the Alberta Medical Association.
- 211 Edmonton - Free, confidential service that provides information and referral to a wide range of community, social, health and government services. Operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association, Edmonton Region.
- Mental Health Resources - Mental health resources, including a 24-hour distress line, operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association, Edmonton Region.
- Suicide Prevention & Support Hotline - Call 1-833-456-4566.
- Pulse Generator - Fitness and Recreation club, with locations at University of Alberta, Royal Alexandra, Grey Nuns, Misericordia, Glenrose Rehabilitation and Sturgeon Hospitals.
