Alberta Medical Association Representative (AMA)
The Alberta Medical Association (AMA) represents Alberta’s physicians, residents and medical students in matters related to the promotion of health, the provision of and payment for medical services, and the integrity of the profession. In the past few years, “hot topics” within the portfolio have included negotiating an agreement with Alberta Health, international medical graduates, and physician workforce planning.
As well as electing a representative from each class, medical students are involved with the AMA in a number of different ways. Student representatives from the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary sit on AMA committees, including the Health Issues Council, the Committee on Constitution & Bylaws, the Fees Advisory Committee and the Physician & Family Support Program Advisory Committee. Each school also sends three student observers, chosen by a draw of those interested, to the AMA’s Representative Forum, which takes place twice a year.
