On January 3rd, 2018 a critical hardware vulnerability in modern processors named Meltdown and Spectre was revealed to the public. These hardware vulnerabilities allow programs to steal data which is currently processed on the computer. This might include passwords and other critical sensitive information.
Meltdown and Spectre impact personal computers, servers, mobile devices, cloud providers, and many other computing devices.
The Office of the Chief Information Security Officer has posted an alert with some additional information here.
The best protection against these security risks is to ensure all devices are updated with the latest software versions and security patches.
MedIT is in the process of installing security patches on its IT infrastructure. We recommend you update your personal devices following vendor recommendations.
MedIT will try to minimize impacts to its IT services, however there may be intermittent outages as security patches are being rolled-out over the next couple of weeks.
These intermittent outages may occur during the following times:
- Friday January 12th 11pm to 6am Saturday January 13th
- Saturday January13th 11pm to 6am Sunday January 14th
- Friday January 19th 11pm to 6am Saturday January 20th
- Saturday January 20th 11pm to 6am Sunday January 21st
