The Medical Laboratory Science program at the University of Alberta has a preprofessional year that is required before admission to the program.

Preprofessional Year Objectives

In the preprofessional year, students will obtain a good basic science background reflecting the disciplines of medical laboratory science. Upon completion of this year, students will:

  1. Develop a background in basic sciences. This will include:
    • General Chemistry
    • Organic Chemistry
    • Genetics
    • Microbiology
    • Statistics
  2. Use correct technical and scientific vocabulary
  3. Be introduced to and have some exposure to the arts or humanities
  4. Know accepted general safety regulations pertinent to the laboratory
  5. Demonstrate ability to follow written and oral instruction
  6. Effectively communicate ideas in written and spoken English
  7. Have the ability to take responsibility for their own learning by demonstrating self-directed study skills
