Students wishing to apply to the Bachelor of Science in Radiation Therapy (BScRT) degree program in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta must meet a series of pre-professional, non-academic and post-acceptance requirements.

Applicants must be Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada on or before the deadline date for applications. A notarized copy of proof of Canadian citizenship or Permanent Resident status must be submitted with the application for admission.Preference will be given to Alberta applicants; however applicants from other provinces may also be considered. Please note: This is a competitive program, and meeting the admission requirements does not guarantee entrance. All applicants must comply with the Code of Applicant Behaviour.

For High School Students:

Please note that you cannot enter our program directly from high school. You will be required to complete or be in the process of completing your pre-professional courses when you apply. If you are planning on attending the University of Alberta for your pre-professional courses you can access all required courses from either the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Science. You can also access equivalents to our pre-professional courses at any Campus Alberta post-secondary institution; however, you will be responsible to ensure that your courses are equivalents. It is recommended that any students considering our program complete the following courses: English Language Arts 30-1; Biology 30; Chemistry 30; Mathematics 30-1; Physics 30

  • Pre-Professional Requirements

    Students wishing to apply to the B.Sc. in Radiation Therapy program must first complete pre-professional coursework:

    Note: Pre-professional courses can be completed at any Canadian post-secondary institution, provided they are of rigor and can be given equivalent credit for the courses noted above.

    It is the learner's responsibility to check that any course taken outside the University of Alberta qualifies for equivalent pre-professional credit.

    The selection process is competitive, and applicants will be ranked on the following:

    • GPA of pre-professional courses.

    • Overall academic achievement (emphasizing the last two most recent years of study).

    • Career reflection letter.

    • Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).

  • Non-Academic Requirements

    In addition to the requirement for completion of pre-professional coursework, students wishing to apply to the B.Sc. in Radiation Therapy program must also complete a series of non-academic requirements as follows. Please note that this is a competitive program, and meeting the admission requirements does not guarantee entrance.

    1. CAREER REFLECTION LETTER - Deadline: April 1

    Applicants must submit a letter outlining evidence of personal reflection regarding their career choice, professional goals, personal skills and attributes, knowledge of the profession, related experience and reasons for seeking admission to the Radiation Therapy program.

    Criteria for submission:

    • Applicant clearly outlines their decision-making process and reason for seeking admission to the Radiation Therapy program versus other health professions;

    • Applicant demonstrates evidence of a relationship between personal experiences, skills and attributes and the Radiation Therapy specialty);

    • Applicant clearly describes and explains future aspirations and professional goals.

    Letters must be submitted electronically in Word or PDF format to the email account by midnight on April 1st and follow these specifications:

    • No more than three pages in length
    • Double-spaced
    • Typed, using a standard 12-pt font


    Interview selection is based on post-secondary academic records and the career reflection letter. Selected applicants will be interviewed to determine if they have the personal qualities necessary for the profession.

    The interview evaluates such characteristics as: Communication, professionalism, decision-making, teamwork, conflict resolution, responsibility, initiative, problem-solving, prioritization and organization.

    Short-listed applicants will be advised of the interview date.


    Besides demonstrating an overall English language proficiency, students need a further level of spoken English proficiency regardless of their citizenship status or country of origin. As such, a OEFL/TSE (Test of English Fluency/Test of Spoken English) may be required.


    Applicants are asked to review the Radiation Therapy Program Technical Standards Self-Assessment and Details document and complete the questionnaire contained in Appendix A of the document. This document is intended to provide guidance to students contemplating application to the program.

  • Post-Acceptance Requirements

    1. Submit non-refundable deposit.

    2. Provide proof of a completed Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Check

    3. Participate in a mandatory student orientation. Not participating in orientation may result in your admissions status being revoked. Orientation events occur throughout the first month of the program.

    4. Participate in mandatory N-95 Respirator Fit Testing and CPR training. Fit testing and CPR training are done in house during the Orientation period. Students are responsible for the costs associated with both.

  • Program Costs

    Students in the Radiation Therapy Program will incur the following costs* in addition to tuition and University of Alberta program costs:

    • N95 Mask Fitting - $31.50 (Every 2 years)
    • CPR HCP Level - $115.50 (Initial Cost)
    • CPR Recertification - $89.25 (Annually)
    • Proximity OneCard - $15.00
    • 2 X Lab Coats - $21.95/each
    • ACMDTT Student Membership - $100.00
    • Police Information Check (Including Vulnerable Sector Check) - $48.00 PIC & $25.00 VSC
    • Immunization Record Review & Update - $60 (Complete Immunization Record), $100 (Incomplete Immunization Record)
    • Course/research Posters (approx. 5) - $25 each
    • Textbooks and Manuals - Variable
    • Student Association Fees - Variable

    *Please Note: All costs are approximate and based on 2016/2017 costs, subject to change and dependent upon the vendor providing services/supplies. An additional fee of $840 (subject to change) + exam sitting fees, paid directly to the CAMRT, is required to write the CAMRT National Certification Exam.
