Residency

Once students have completed the undergraduate medical program, they continue into a postgraduate training program for two to six years. The residency training leads to certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

The admissions process for postgraduate medical residents starts at the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) website. CaRMS provides a transparent and simple way to choose the best training program to meet each resident’s career goals.

CaRMS provides a complete list of the resident training programs throughout Canada. Each item outlines the application deadlines, documentation required to apply, course curriculum and training sites. Program contact information is also provided for ease of communication.

After the match has been completed, the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education initiates registration with the Office of the Registrar.
