The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) was established to protect physicians' practice and professional integrity. CMPA provides residents with the liability insurance necessary to protect them from patients seeking legal action.
The University of Alberta requires all residents to have a CMPA membership before they can partake in their residency. CMPA dues are the responsibility of the residents; the University will not reimburse this cost.

The Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta (PARA) was established in 1975 to represent medical residents in Alberta. Its purpose is to pursue improved training and remuneration, and to determine non-academic terms and conditions of resident positions.
For ministry-funded residents, dues equate to 0.95 per cent of gross dollars per cheque. This sum is automatically deducted from their monthly pay. Residents who wish to become a PARA member but are not ministry-funded can contact the PARA office directly.
PARA negotiates its Collective Agreement with Alberta Health Services, University of Alberta and University of Calgary. New members will receive a copy of the Collective Agreement in their PARA orientation package.
PARA is governed through collaborative efforts from executives and the board of directors. Residents hold executive positions, while the board of directors is made up of elected representatives from medical programs in Edmonton and Calgary. Residents nominate and elect their colleagues each spring. PARA also provides representatives to sit on committees of the Alberta Medical Association, College of Physicians and Surgeons, and other organizations.
If you are interested in serving as a committee representative, require more information, or wish to join our organization, please contact us at para@para-ab.ca.

The Canadian Post-MD Education Registry (CAPER) is a national database that provides accurate, timely information regarding post-MD training in Canada. It was established in 1986 by various Canadian medical organizations with an interest in promoting postgraduate medical training.
Each Canadian Faculty of Medicine is required to provide CAPER with information concerning trainees in post-MD programs each year. All residents are required to complete the Annual Statistical Report form, which authorizes the Faculty to release information to CAPER. The form will be included with their contracts. CAPER maintains resident confidentiality.
