Rural Clinical Faculty

The Office of Rural & Regional Health is constantly looking for new opportunities for the Rural and Regional Rotation Program. As such, we invite all interested physicians and clinics to participate in our program.

Information for potential programs and preceptors is available in this section. The benefits offered to clinical faculty in recognition of their efforts to support medical education are also outlined in this section.


Information for Programs

The Office of Rural & Regional Health appreciates program participation in exposing medical learners to the excitement of rural and regional medicine.

We have included some information and reminders for your program to be aware of concerning rotations:

  • Some programs may decide whether they would like medical students and/or residents to complete various evaluations.
  • Before students and residents may receive reimbursement for expenses incurred during their rotation, they must complete evaluations (if required) via WebEval. Any program wishing to waive this requirement should advise the Office of Rural & Regional Health.
  • At the end of the rotation, students have a to make an application for reimbursement. Reimbursements will not be considered after this period.
  • The honoraria for medical student rotations, including electives, will be $1,300 per training month.
  • The honoraria for PGY1 rotations, including electives, will be $1,100 per training month.
  • The honoraria for PGY2 and beyond, including electives, will be $550 per training month.
  • Please advise the Office of Rural & Regional Health immediately if learners make changes or cancel their core rural rotation. We will adjust our records accordingly and notify the appropriate contacts of the change.

Information for Preceptors

At the Office of Rural & Regional Health, we appreciate your participation in exposing medical learners to the exciting area of rural and regional medicine.

We have included some information and reminders for your program to be aware of concerning rotations:

  • Preceptors at each of the rotation sites are granted an honorarium to recognize their teaching efforts. They will be supported with coaching via faculty development and on-site visits. The honoraria for medical student rotations, including electives, will be $1,300 per training month.
  • The honoraria for PGY1 rotations, including electives, will be $1,100 per training month.
  • The honoraria for PGY2 and beyond, including electives, will be $550 per training month.
  • Physician preceptors are sent an honorarium confirmation form on a monthly basis. Currently, preceptor honoraria are made only after completion of evaluations of the learner on the One45 or access. Evaluations must be completed within 30 days of the end of the rotation.
  • Please review the evaluation with the learner prior to submitting it.
  • For medical learners on a core family medicine rotation, please make special note that a midpoint evaluation must also be completed.
  • All expense and honoraria forms are returned to the Office of Rural & Regional Health. Preceptor honoraria will be paid upon confirmation of the completed rotation evaluations (where applicable).

Library Privileges

All clinical faculty members are issued a University of Alberta ONEcard. It is used as general ID on campus and will provide you with access to a number of different services, such as the U of A Libraries.

Clinical faculty members have access to the majority of library services. These services include printer access, use of the university's subscription to full-text online journals and searchable for articles and resources.

Email and Web Access

All faculty members are provided with a Campus Computing ID (CCID), which offers the recipient a secure email address and one gigabyte of storage.
