The following are links to the financial education talk on June 21st, 2017. Information is mainly for incoming medical students. This is part one of a financial education series we currently developing for the medical students.
Learners in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry in desperate financial need - who have exhausted all other sources of funding - may apply to the associate dean of leaner advocacy & wellness for a small, one-time emergency loan (less than $1,000). The number of loans is limited and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Consideration will be based on receipt of a letter outlining the financial circumstances and a detailed budget. The Class of 1994, Medical Alumni Association, Alberta Medical Association, and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry have generously supplied funding for these loans.
Medical Students' Association (MSA) Emergency Bursary
The emergency bursary is intended to provide financial aid to those medical learners displaying the greatest need in meeting essential living expenses. These include rent, food, utilities and medication. The money from this bursary is not intended for payment of debts to the University of Alberta exclusively (ie. tuition, books, fines, parking tickets).
Each member of the Medical Students' Association is eligible for one award per year. Applicants are required to:
- Meet with the associate dean of learner advocacy & wellness, of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, to justify their application.
Common financial issues and concerns during medical school and residency:
- Debt management
- Debt consolidation and repayment
- Budgeting and cash flow
- Disability insurance and life insurance
- Tax savings
- First home purchase and mortgages
