Research Awards

Endowed Studentships

Several graduate studentships are made possible by the generosity of donors. Those listed below are administered by the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. We are truly grateful to these donors, whose legacies further the training of future researchers in our faculty.

Violet Kilburn Award

Endowed by the Violet Winona Kilburn Trust Fund.


One award of $10,000 will be awarded to a full time PhD student in Medicine & Dentistry, selected on the basis of superior academic achievement, research abilities and the student’s contribution to research.

Eligibility

- Student must be registered in a full-time, thesis-based PhD program by Fall 2019 or Winter 2020.
- Student must be registered full-time in a Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry graduate program
- GPA on the 2 most recent years of graded courses must be at least 3.5
- Student may not have held the award previously.

Value

- $10,000 will be paid over 12 months, starting in either September 2019 or January 2020.
- Award may not be held concurrently with another award of $13,000 or greater

Application Procedure

Students should apply through the 75th Anniversary competition, using the form and deadline listed there. Applications will be judged on the same general criteria and will be adjudicated by the same committee, but please note that eligibility is limited to PhD students only, as above.

Please note: If you have already received a 75th Anniversary award in the past, you may apply for a Violet Kilburn, but you would not be considered for another 75th Anniversary award.

Lawson Award

Funded by an Estate gift from Mr. David Lawson


Two awards of $10,000 each will be offered, one for a doctoral student in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry whose thesis research is ‘clinical’ (ie pillars II, III and IV), and one for a doctoral student  registered in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, who is undertaking basic (pillar I) research. 

Eligibility

- Student must be registered in a full-time, thesis-based PhD program in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry by Fall 2019 or Winter 2020.
- GPA on the 2 most recent years of graded courses must be at least 3.3
- Preference will be given to a student whose supervisor will provide an additional $10,000 or more in support for the student
- Student may not have held the award previously.

Value

- $10,000 will be paid over 12 months, starting in either September 2019 or January 2020.
- Award may not be held concurrently with another award of $13,000 or greater

Delnor Award

Funded by the Delnor Construction Ltd. Endowment for Medical Research


One award of $1000 will be awarded annually to a PhD student registered in a full-time thesis-based program in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. This award will be added as a special merit award for an outstanding applicant in the 75th Anniversary competition.

Doctoral students applying to the 75th Anniversary competition will be automatically considered. The top-ranked PhD student receiving a 75th Anniversary award, will receive the Delnor scholarship as well.
