Important Considerations:

  • Application success rate in 2017/18 was ~60% and not all qualified Visiting Speakers received funding for their visit.
  • Applicants should consider applying up to 6 months in advance of the visit to maximize their chance of funding and allow for adequate time to advertise the visit and finalize planning.
  • Application adjudication typically takes 2-3 weeks to complete and applicants can expect to receive the results up to 1 month after the deadline.
  • Please send one single combined PDF ensuring the application is signed.
Note: Please do not digitally sign the application, the PDF must be editable. Include the following items:
  • Application
  • Letter of Support (not mandatory)
  • Itinerary (outline of visit)
  • Flight information (airline quote)
  • Include any other package information
  • CV
  • Poster (Must be provided 2 weeks from date of visit)

Walter Mackenzie Visiting Speaker Fund

The Visiting Speaker Fund is sponsored by the Walter Mackenzie Visiting Professorship Endowment and is administered by the Office of Research, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. The Visiting Speaker Fund will support costs associated with selected visits to the University of Alberta by established scientists with excellent records in biomedical and health research. Funds for this program are limited and not all qualified Visiting Speakers will receive funding for their visits. Decisions of the Visiting Speaker Committee are final. Please note that unsuccessful applicants can re-apply in subsequent months as long as the visit is not in the same month as application. Thus, applicants should consider applying up to 6 months in advance of the visit to maximize their chance of funding. The applicants hosting the visit are expected to seek other sources of support in addition to applying to this fund.
