Pre-2016 Guidelines

MA course-based

Students must successfully complete 27 credits; 24 credits of course work and a 3 credit research project. The timeline for this program is two years, to a maximum of four years. The program culminates in a 40-50 page research paper.

Students must complete mandatory ethics training prior to the completion of their capstone.

At the end of your program, you must request registration in MLCS 900/901 or C LIT 900 to complete your capstone project.

 

MA thesis-based

Students must successfully complete 24 credits; 18 credits of course work and a 3 credit thesis. The typical timeline for this program is two years, to a maximum of four years. This program culminates in a 100-page thesis.

In their first year, students must complete mandatory ethics training, choose a supervisor, and submit a thesis proposal.

PhD program

Students must complete 27 credits of course work, and the remainder of the time be registered in thesis sections to a total of 36 credits. The typical timeline for this program is 4-5 years, to a maximum of six years. The PhD dissertation should be around 200 pages.

In the first year, a student must take courses, complete ethics training, choose a supervisor, and submit a thesis proposalNote that this differs from the thesis proposal you will submit as part of your candidacy requirement.

In the second year, a student should finish his or her courses, prove language competency, and begin working towards candidacy by preparing a reading list with the supervisor.

In the third year, a student should complete (or have previously completed) candidacy. For detailed information, see our Candidacy Procedures.

In years four and five, a student should be focusing as much as possible on the dissertation. 

Throughout your program, we encourage you to be active in departmental workshops and other campus events. When you get to the dissertation stage, ensure you reach out to your peers, your supervisor, and the graduate advisor. Writing is a lonely process, and we encourage you to ask for support!
