Hello, my name is Jamie Lee McGilvery. I was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. My family is hearing and I am the only deaf person in the family. I graduated from Gallaudet University. I received my Bachelor in Social Work in 2016. I have graduated in Masters in Sign Language Education (MASLED) at Gallaudet University, in August 2017.
What is your favourite thing about teaching?
Being a teacher is such a rewarding job because you see your students grow and learn American Sign Language because of you. You get to learn more about yourself and your students everyday. It’s a never dull moment. It’s always something! I always get excited to go to class to teach! I would teach forever if I could! Self-growth is definitely one of my favorite parts of teaching.
What is the last book you read and loved?
There are so many books I’d like to list. I enjoy reading books that are based on true stories. I enjoy them because I get to see how people can find themselves, to reconnect, to fight for their rights, and many more. I am a big fan on movement changes.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I have been to a couple of places in the world. Every place has its own uniqueness. I can tell you that Croatia is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe that I’ve been to. The food is amazing. Greece & Norway is where I think I would like to go next to explore. I will try to travel to as many countries as I can before I get too OLD.
What three words best describe your experience as a teacher?
Reward, Growth and Rapport. You see your students become successful. You see your students grow. You get to connect with them and learn one or two new things about yourself and the experience they share with you!
What do you wish people knew about ASL?
You get to use your hands and facial expressions to communicate with people. You can even have a conversation under the water. There are so many reasons why ASL is so beautiful. Come to an ASL class and find out! I promise you won’t be disappointed!--
