Scholarships & Awards

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies (MLCS), through the Student Awards Office of the University of Alberta, annually awards approximately $35,150.00 in Book Prizes and Undergraduate Scholarships to students for excellent performance in courses taught within the department.

Catherine Folinsbee Memorial Scholarship

Conditions: To be awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement to a major or honors language student from the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies who is entering third or fourth year. The purpose of the Scholarship is to provide some financial assistance to a student wanting to attend a program of formal language study in an environment where one of the languages offered by the Department is the official language.

Roland Bonvalet Memorial Scholarship - French

Conditions: To be awarded to a student registered in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, who will have completed at least one full course equivalent in French beyond the beginners' level, who wants to improve his or her competence in the French language and who has an outstanding academic record as determined by the Department. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide some financial assistance to students wanting to attend a spring or summer or year program of language study in a French speaking environment.

E.J.H. Greene Memorial Scholarship - Romance Languages

Conditions: To be awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement to a student entering third or fourth year in the general or honors French, Italian, Latin American Studies, or Spanish program (if Combined Honors, with the principal subject in a Romance Language) of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies.

Mrs. Kathe & Mr. Siegfried Klotsche Scholarship - German

Conditions: Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement continuing in or convocating from the Faculty of Arts with a a major or minor in German language studies. Selection based on academic achievement in relevant courses (as determined by the Department of Modern Languages Language and Cultural Studies). of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. Preference given to a student with demonstrated volunteerism in Edmonton's German community. If no candidates display demonstrated involvement in Edmonton's German community, preference given to a student with demonstrated volunteerism in social and/or community based organization(s).


Torskeklubben-Founder's Prize

$2750.00 to be awarded annually on the basis of superior academic achievement to a student demonstrating dedication to the study of Scandinavian languages and culture and skill in language acquisition (by nomination from the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies).


The Marian Campbell Fund

$1500.00 to be awarded annually to a student either as an honor student or as a major in the Scandinavian program at the University of Alberta achieving the highest academic standing in Scandinavian courses (at the discretion of the University of Alberta Scandinavian program instructors).

Book prizes to top student who has completed Norwegian 111 & 112 taken in the same year, Norwegian 211 & 212 taken in the same year, Swedish 111 & 112 taken in the same year, and Swedish 211 & 212 taken in the same year.


The Lennart and Joan Petersson Vasa Centennial Prize

$1000.00 to be awarded on the basis of superior academic achievement to a student completing Swedish 211 & 212 taken in the same year, provided that the student's record is otherwise satisfactory. See Vasa Order of America, Alberta District No. 18

Canadian Polish Congress - Alberta Branch Prize for Polish Language and Literature

The prize in Polish studies, founded by the Canadian Polish Congress Alberta Branch was established in 1981 (Polish language) and 1986 (Polish literature). It is awarded annually to a student with the highest standing in POLSH 111 or 112.

The Aleksander Matejko Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship was endowed in 2001 by the Polish Culture Society and by friends and family of the late Professor Aleksander Matejko. It is awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement who has completed courses that deal with the history, sociology, language, and/or culture of Poland.

The Domecki Family Prize in Polish Studies

The Prize was endowed in 2005 by the Domecki Family in memory of the late engineer Mieczyslaw A. Domecki. It is awarded to a student with superior academic achievement in either first or second year Polish language courses.

Consulate General of Poland Monetary Award

The award was established in 2006 as a result of the new initiative taken by the Consul General in Vancouver to make the Polish Programme at the University of Alberta more visible. For many years the Consulate General of Poland in Vancouver has supported and promoted the Programme in official and non-official way. Based on the formal request of the Consul General, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland has agreed to establish a monetary award of $500 to one full or part-time student in 2nd or 3rd year of Polish. The purpose of the Award is to provide some financial assistance to a student wanting to attend a course of formal language study in the Summer School in Poland.

Consulate General of Poland Book Prize

The prize was established in 2000, first to award students of Polish origin active in organizing the Polish Week - a major cultural event in Edmonton. Since 2003 the Book Prize has been added to the list of the MLCS awards in the field of Polish language and culture. It is awarded annually to a student in senior Polish courses to further his or her knowledge of the Polish language and culture.
