The First Concert of the 2017-2018 Mainstage Season

Edmonton, AB -- Volk for Chamber Music is the first concert of the 2017/18 mainstage season, presented by the University of Alberta Department of Music. The concert will be held at 7:30 PM on September 8, 2017, at Convocation Hall (University of Alberta, 116 St. and 85 Ave.).

Featuring the music of Schubert, Schumann and Brahms, Volk highlights the melodic and popular folk styles of these classical composers.

Volk will be performed by Department of Music faculty members and accomplished musicians Robert Uchida (violin), Gabrielle Després (violin), Laura Veeze (viola), Rafael Hoekman (cello) and Patricia Tao (piano).

Pianist Patricia Tao has served as Artistic Director for the Edmonton Chamber Music Society's Summer Solstice Music Festival for ten years and is a founding member and performer with the award-winning Guild Trio.

One of Canada's leading violinists, Robert Uchida currently serves as Concertmaster of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and has been a regularly featured soloist with many Canadian orchestras and chamber music festivals.

Seventeen-year old violinist Gabrielle Després began violin studies at the age of three and is currently studying with Robert Uchida. She has won numerous local, provincial and national competitions in both violin and piano.

Rafael Hoekman is currently principal cellist of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, with awards from the Orford International Competition, the Montreal Symphony competition and the Quebec Symphony's Canadian Concerto Competition.

Dutch violinist and violist, Laura Veeze has been principal second violin of the Radio Kamer Filharmonie in the Netherlands since 2007, and is currently a member of the first violin section in the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

Single concert tickets are $20 Adult and $10 Student & Senior. Audiences can bundle up and save with the $60 Season Flex Pass (six concert tickets redeemable in any combination at any of the 11 mainstage concerts).
