Program Requirements

The Honors in Neuroscience Program will introduce students to the major areas of neuroscience and provides an opportunity for each student to explore a research interest in their final year. Students can enter the program out of high school or transfer from another university or program.

For applicants entering from high school, the first two years include a number of foundational science courses. Third- and fourth-year courses focus more directly on brain structure and function, with lectures emphasizing different aspects of cellular, molecular, systems and cognitive neuroscience.

Fourth-year students apply their classroom knowledge and gain hands-on research experience in a neuroscience laboratory of their choice during individual study projects with an NMHI faculty member. Students planning to enter Research Stream B (Undergraduate Honors Thesis in Neuroscience) are encouraged to take a *3 credit research project course in their third year of study (i.e. enrol in either NEURO 451 or NEURO 452) to gain experience in research prior to their fourth year. Note, however, that only *3 in research credits above the *12 from NEURO 498/499 in Research Stream B are permitted. Students in Research Stream B are not permitted to take NEURO 450.

Students are required to maintain a 3.3 GPA in all fours years of the program.
