Statement regarding media reports of a student being evicted from University of Alberta residence in 2016

    January 29, 2019

The University of Alberta is aware that a student was issued a letter evicting him from residence on Oct 28, 2016. This should not have happened and we publicly apologize to the student involved.

As soon as the Office of the Dean of Students became aware on Nov 1, 2016 that the letter had been issued, the university reviewed and reversed the eviction decision. The university also reached out to the student to offer further supports.

Self-harm is and was not a reason for exclusion from residence. When a student is at imminent risk of self-harm, we call on emergency services. Once there is no imminent threat to safety, the university works to provide the longer-term services wherever the student lives. We support students in residence who struggle with chronic suicidal ideation, and we have processes that allow us to rapidly respond and correct our actions when an intervention is not initially appropriate. We are continually reviewing processes to be in alignment with best practices.

The University of Alberta is dedicated to helping our students grow and achieve their full potential - and that includes supporting their mental health. The ways in which the university responds to student mental health issues are constantly evolving and improving. We know that we can and must continue to do more to ensure that students have access to supports they need.

With the U of A’s Suicide Prevention Framework as a guide, we continue to work closely with students, faculty, staff and experts in the field to enhance the programs and services that we currently offer, and to identify and address gaps in services, both on and off campus.

The well-being of our students is a top priority, and we encourage any student experiencing distress and thoughts of suicide to reach out directly to the Office of the Dean of Students for help.
