AI and the Learning Environment

U of A exploring the opportunities and challenges of the use of AI in education

With the ability of artificial intelligence to transform everything from healthcare to transportation, universities are exploring how this rapidly expanding field might enhance the learning experience for students. But as with any new technology, there are important ethical considerations. Are universities ready to navigate the complex terrain of AI — including concerns about plagiarism, cheating and misinformation — and what will be the impact on the future of education?

The University of Alberta is at the forefront of academic institutions seeking answers to those questions, and in proactively finding opportunities to incorporate AI to enhance student education.

The U of A has created the Provost’s Taskforce on AI and the Learning Environment to foster conversation across its campuses about generative AI. Chaired by Karsten Mündel, the taskforce will provide recommendations to university communities on how best to handle the opportunities and challenges of generative AI in post-secondary education.

Journalists are invited to speak with Mündel to learn more about how the U of A is paving the way for the responsible use of AI in education.
