More about Emma’s internship

Emma is currently working with Beaver First Nation as the Youth, Recreation and Sports intern.  Since arriving in Boyer, she has been helping with writing a grant in the hopes of developing a recreation facility aimed at increasing youth outdoor physical activity.  She has also been helping with the Jays Care baseball camp.  Depending on Covid-19 restrictions, she is hoping to run a beach volleyball league and will help the other interns with the community garden, scheduled to start in Boyer this summer.

A conversation with Emma about her internship with Engage North --

What are your specific interests as an intern for Engage North?

I hope to help provide various youth programming throughout the summer such as gardening workshops, cooking classes, beading and embroidery workshops, and various recreational sports leagues. However, I will be happy to work. I am excited to work with the three other interns in Boyer this summer!

Who are you?

My name is Emma Haggett. I am a spring 2021 graduate from the University of Alberta, majoring in Human Geography and minoring in Sociology. I am currently the Youth, Recreation and Sports intern in Beaver First Nation. I am interested in health geography, social justice, and urban design. Aside from school, I enjoy walking in the river valley, embroidery, cooking, and playing soccer.

Why do you want to be an intern? What attracted you or motivated you to get the position?

As a settler, learning about First Nation, Metis, and Inuit populations and the complex and enriching history that surrounds these communities is important. Having in-person hands-on experience working and living in one of these communities is something I will forever cherish.  Further, as I have an older sister who was an Engage North intern in 2017, I was encouraged to apply. I am also excited to learn more about northern communities and witness the many beautiful landscapes they have to offer.
