Dr. O’Rourke’s background is in primary care with a specific focus on the advancement of nursing and other allied health provider’s scope of practice within team based health care delivery models. She led the development of one of the initial Nurse Practitioner Led Clinics in Ontario. As the Chief Nurse Practitioner at the Belleville Nurse Practitioner Led Clinic she supported the development of an innovative model of team based health care delivery. She has taught a variety of courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, more recently health assessment and pathophysiology.


Research

Dr. O’Rourke’s research focuses on stakeholder participation in the development and introduction of team based health care delivery models. Her doctoral dissertation examined the introduction of the first Nurse Practitioner Led Clinic in Ontario. She is currently developing proposals to examine the potential for the Nurse Practitioner role in Alberta’s changing primary care system and investigate interventions to support improved professional integration with health care teams. Dr. O’Rourke has received several invitations to speak nationally and internationally about the leadership role for Nurse Practitioners in team based health care delivery models.
