Karen Sylte

I graduated (2008) with a Master's Degree in Nursing from the University of Alberta. My Master's degree studies focused on Leadership, Teaching and Learning. I am passionate about nursing and about teaching undergraduate nursing students. I enthusiastically help develop and encourage future professional nursing leaders. My academic interests include medical/surgical nursing, nursing pedagogy, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, relational practice, nursing ethics and nursing research.

I am a dedicated Registered Nurse and Faculty Lecturer! My clinical expertise includes acute care medical/surgical nursing in areas (pediatric oncology, renal dialysis, nephrology, and acute care adult surgery). I have worked at the University Hospital in Edmonton, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Medical Centre in Baton Rouge, LA, USA, and in Community Health in the Edmonton, AB region. My teaching experience includes clinical teaching, learning center, simulation and classroom theory teaching at the University of Alberta (Edmonton) and Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo). I have taught for over 16 years within all years of the Collaborative Program and After Degree Program at the University of Alberta. My leadership experience includes leading teaching teams, coordinating the After Degree Program, advising students and being a teaching and learning mentor for fellow nurse educators. I am an experienced researcher and have published articles about critical thinking and emotional intelligence in nursing.
