Celebrating a century of registered nursing practice in Alberta

Faculty of Nursing alumni receive nearly half of 100 CARNA Centennial Awards recognizing exceptional impact on nursing community

Yolanda Poffenroth - 18 March 2016

To celebrate a century of registered nursing in Alberta, the College & Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) launched the Centennial Awards to recognize 100 Alberta registered nurses who have made an exceptional impact to the nursing community, demonstrate leadership and inspire others.

Alumni and faculty of the Faculty of Nursing received an astounding 46 of the 100 Centennial Awards.

Anita Molzahn, dean of the Faculty of Nursing and recipient a Centennial Awards herself, wasn't completely surprised by the showing of our alumni. Since our founding as Alberta's first university-based school of nursing in 1923, one of our core values is recognizing our responsibility to students as future practitioners and leaders of nursing.

"Having 46 of our graduates acknowledged by CARNA for their outstanding contribution in the area of administration, direct care, education or research is an amazing feat," said Molzahn. "I'm delighted to see the impact that our graduates are making to the field of nursing and how they are shaping the Canadian healthcare system."

Since its inception in 1916, CARNA has promoted excellence in nursing regulation and practice for the health of all Albertans. This was the vision of the organization in 1916 with 91 members and nearly 100 years later-with more than 36,000 members-the vision remains unchanged.

"The CARNA Centennial Awards are about celebrating our nursing history and today's remarkable registered nurses and nurse practitioners who help shape and move our profession forward," said CARNA President Shannon Spenceley. "Individually and collectively, these recipients highlight the varied and valuable contributions RNs and NPs make to health care and to our profession. We are honored to recognize each of them with this very special award."
