Celebrating Research: Kara Schick-Makaroff

Hear from Associate Professor Dr. Kara Schick-Makaroff whose program of research addresses mental health concerns for people living at home with chronic and life-limiting illnesses, specifically kidney failure.

During her studies as a master's student, Dr. Kara Schick-Makaroff experienced firsthand the important role the kidneys play when her father became suddenly ill and they stopped working. He was diagnosed shortly after with a very advanced multiple myeloma — and one of the early symptoms was kidney failure. Despite being a nurse, Dr. Makaroff admits she barely knew what the kidneys did prior to this; however, she quickly realized how important quality of life is for people living with chronic and life-limiting illnesses.

"The goal of my program of research is to promote the use of quality of life assessment, enhance person-centred care, and improve services for people living at home with chronic and life-limiting illnesses, particularly kidney failure," said Makaroff, who is an associate professor at the University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing.

Hear from Dr. Schick-Makaroff on why this research is so rewarding, the challenges that come with it, and more through this Q & A.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of your work?

Leading research with a Patient / Community Advisory Committee. It is amazing (and humbling) to co-lead with, and learn from, people who are living with kidney failure.

What’s the most challenging aspect of your work?

From a person-centred orientation, it is a challenge to shift healthcare from being system- or clinician-centric, towards person-centred (at all levels of health care delivery). This video is a great example of this challenge.

Where do you want your research to be in 5 years?

I would like my research to have created a culture shift in dialysis care where the mental health concerns of people living with kidney failure are both acknowledged and addressed.

What is something your coworkers do not know about you?

I can fit my fist inside my mouth. (I triple dog dare you not to try…)

Where is your favourite place on campus?

My office. I miss working on campus.
