Students may take courses (normally a maximum of 6 course weights or credits) at the University of Alberta as a Special Graduate Student. Transfer credit can be obtained, provided the courses have not been counted toward a previous degree or program nor included in the GPA calculation to satisfy admission requirements.
Please begin by reviewing the graduate course timetable on Bear Tracks. Sign in as a Guest if you are not a University of Alberta student. This site shows planned course offerings for upcoming terms. Special students are not eligible for advanced nursing specialty courses with clinical components but a number of core and elective courses are available if space permits.
Contact the Graduate Office for information on availability of space in the course(s) of interest (include the course name, number as well as the class number and section, etc. as listed on Bear Tracks). Special graduate students are placed on a waiting list as full and part time students have registration priority.
If, after discussion with the Graduate Office, you wish to apply to the Faculty of Nursing for admission as a Special Graduate Student, please apply as per instructions below.
Deadlines for submission of documents
- February 1 for admission to Spring / Summer Session
- May 1 for admission to Fall Session (this includes post-Masters)
- October 1 for admission to Winter Session
Requirements for admission to the Faculty of Nursing as a Special Graduate Student are as follows:
- On-line application and $100 application fee (Paper applications are not accepted)
- Current Curriculum Vitae
- Official or certified true transcript/mark sheets and degree certificates from all institutions attended, regardless of the number of courses taken or the amount of time spent there. Transcripts uploaded to your online application.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 / 4.0 on the most recent 60 credits
Once all supporting documentation has been uploaded and the online application has been submitted, the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies reviews the application package and determines eligibility for admission. If admission is recommended, the Graduate Office or applicant will complete a Manual Registration form, pending available space in the class. The Manual Registration form will be sent, with the application, to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) for final approval. The FGSR will complete your admission and registration. Fees will be assessed; financial information can be accessed on Bear Tracks.
IMPORTANT: Students applying for Special Student Status must be aware that “Special Student” application fees are non-refundable, applications are valid for one year and the student is not guaranteed class availability.
