Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) to BScN

Program Description – Please note the new curriculum for Fall 2018

The Faculty of Nursing has implemented a new curriculum for the RPN to BScN Program for Fall 2018 with a focus on concept based and intentional clinical learning. Intentional clinical learning is a purposeful approach to providing students with the foundational knowledge and skills to provide safe quality patient care in today’s complex health settings. Please see the course sequencing information below.

The Faculty of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program for Registered Psychiatric Nurses who have graduated from an approved Psychiatric Nursing diploma program to obtain a BScN. 

As of Fall 2011, the Faculty of Nursing allows Registered Psychiatric Nurses to complete this program at both Edmonton and Camrose sites. Students admitted to the program in Camrose will attend classes in the Husfloen Building at 4316 38 Street in the city of Camrose.

Admission Requirements 
Admission requirements are outlined below. Students are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of their registrations and for completion of the specified program requirements. 

Early offers of admission may be granted to early applicants who meet eligibility requirements. The number in brakcets beside the course name indicates the required units of course weight ("credits"). 

1. Subject Requirements 
A minimum Admission GPA (AGPA) of 3.0 
i) English (*3) 
ii) Medical Microbiology (*3) - requires a minimum grade of C+ and must be taken within 5 years of the RPN-BScN Program start date 
iii) Human Physiology (*6) - requires a minimum grade of C+ and must be taken within 5 years of the RPN-BScN Program start date 

2. Other Requirements 
i) Graduation from a psychiatric nursing program. 
ii) Proof of current registration with a provincial psychiatric nursing association and eligibility to register with the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association of Alberta. 
iii) Official transcripts of RPN diploma program and any other postsecondary education taken.

Effective Fall 2018 admission and onward, these are the new Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) to BScN Program Requirements. At this time, I don't know if or what courses will transfer as it's being reviewed by the Associate Dean of Undergraduate programs.
