Migration and Health

About Us

Migration is an increasing global phenomenon. In the year 2016, 7.5 million individuals in Canada are immigrants. Immigrants are a vital source of long-term economic and societal benefits to both the communities they live and the communities in which they settle. Evidence suggests that the majority of immigrants arrive in Canada with relatively higher levels of physical and mental health (a phenomenon called the healthy immigrant effect); however, health declines after a period of time in Canada. Moreover, sub-groups of immigrants experience individual, societal, and structural barriers that hinder economic and social integration with resulting negative health outcomes.

The aim of the Migration and Health Research Group is to address intersecting global, national and local issues related to migration and health. Our group consist of faculty members, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows who have an interest in the area of migration and health.
