Flow Cytometry Facility

The Flow Cytometry Facility, established in 1995 as a multi-user facility, enables researchers from a variety of disciplines to implement flow cytometry techniques in their research.

The Facility is available to other departments at the university, as well as to public and private sectors outside of the Cross Cancer Institute, on an availability and fee-per-service basis.

The Facility contains a BD FACS Calibur bench top analyzer, an Influx cell sorter and four computer workstations for data analysis.

The Facility is located in the Division of Experimental Oncology, Room 2331 of the east wing and second floor of the Cross Cancer Institute.

Using the Facility

Clients gain user privileges after completing an approximately two hour training session. Alternatively, clients may request facility staff to perform data acquisition and analysis on a fee per service basis. Facility staff performs all sorting operations. Contact facility staff to book a training session or appointment.

Clients may book up to three hours per day and up to two weeks in advance. Contact staff if extensions are required. Advance notice of cancellation is required to avoid unnecessary charges. 


Fees

The below fees apply to Cross Cancer Institute and University of Alberta users. For private sector users, all usage is charged at $100 per hour

  • BD FACS Calibur
    • Data acquisition by user: $15 per hour
    • Data analysis by user: no charge
    • Data acquisition and analysis by Facility staff: $50 per hour
    • Training session: $50 per hour
  • BD Influx
    • Sorting, data acquisition and analysis by user: $30 per hour
Note: There is a fee cap of $8,000 per fiscal year. Principal Investigator/Lab that attains $8,000 of user fees within a fiscal year will not incur further charges until the next fiscal year.

Cell Sorter - BD Influx

Five solid state lasers (355nm, 457nm, 488 nm, 561 nm and 642nm) with the Small Particle Option (SPO) allow simultaneous measurement and high speed sorting of fifteen parameters, including two light scatters - forward scatter (FSC) and side scatter (SSC) and thirteen fluorescence parameters.

  • Sort rates up to 30,000/second
  • Small Particle Option (SPO) with resolution greater than 0.2mm
  • Circulating water bath option allows cooling or heating of sample and collection tubes
  • PC workstation with WindowsÒ XP Professional and Spigot 6.1.4 software
  • Data backup - USB, CD burner

Applications

  • Sterile sorting of stem cells, subpopulations of GFP, mcherry, DSred transfected cells, micro particles, bacteria, etc
  • Sort up to four populations simultaneously into tubes (micro-tubes up to 50mL)
  • Sort defined cell numbers into multi-well plates (6, 24, 48, 96, 384), PCR tubes or onto slides and filters

Bench Top Cytometer - BD FACS Calibur

Dual laser (488nm and 635nm) bench top flow cytometer capable of the simultaneous measurement of six parameters, including two light scatters - forward scatter (FSC) and side scatter (SSC) and four fluorescence parameters.
