Our second annual Eyeball Gala will bring together ophthalmic specialists, surgeons, business and community leaders, and loyal friends to raise awareness and funds for the fight for sight and life-enhancing work of the Eye Institute of Alberta.

  • About Eye Institute
The Eye Institute at the Royal Alexandra Hospital is a 40,000 square foot self-contained center located in the Active Treatment Center. It is made up of a few different departments; the outpatient unit, inpatient unit, surgery unit and administration area. The Eye Institute sees about 5,000 patients each month. Ophthalmologists provide eye care services to patients from Edmonton, as well as Northern Alberta, Northern BC, Northern Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. The clinic is also a University of Alberta teaching facility that trains residents and fellows to become eye specialists.

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has an active research program integrating clinical and basic science approaches to improve the visual health of Canadians. Major research themes include genetics, tele-ophthalmology, clinical trials and ocular physiology, all of which seek to translate research advances directly into improved clinical practice.

  • Virtual Reality Experience

At this year's Gala there will be VIRTUAL REALITY EXPERIENCE! This immersive interactive VR experience will utilize head mounted displays, which transport the viewer “down the rabbit hole”.  Viewers will "experience" 3 eye diseases while there:

Age Related Macular Degeneration -  this disease blurs the sharp, central vision you need for “straight-ahead” activities such as reading, sewing, and driving
Retinitis Pigmentosa - causes the breakdown of photoreceptor cells (cells in the retina that detect light)
Cataracts - is a clouding of the lens in the eye which leads to a decrease in vision
