The Eye Institute
at the Royal Alexandra Hospital is a 40,000 square foot self-contained center located in the Active Treatment Center. It is made up of a few different departments; the outpatient unit
, inpatient unit, surgery unit and administration area. The Eye Institute sees about 5,000 patients each month. Ophthalmologists provide eye care services to patients from Edmonton, as well as Northern Alberta, Northern BC, Northern Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. The clinic is also a University of Alberta teaching facility that trains residents and fellows to become eye specialists.
The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has an active research program integrating clinical and basic science approaches to improve the visual health of Canadians. Major research
themes include genetics, tele-ophthalmology, clinical trials and ocular physiology, all of which seek to translate research advances directly into improved clinical practice.
