The strong partnership between the Department of Pediatrics and Alberta Health Services has helped the Stollery Children’s Hospital create the only specialized Division of Pediatric Dermatology in Alberta.

The division operates predominantly as an outpatient division with clinics held in the Pediatric Outpatient Department. Inpatient consultations are provided as needed. The division also provides dermatologic care to children in Northern and Central Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan and the Northeast regions of British Columbia.

The division uses Telehealth to link healthcare providers and patients in different locations without having to travelling to where they are.

Children with a wide variety of skin problems, ranging from the common ones such as cradle cap, eczema, psoriasis, warts, molluscum contagiosum and acne, to rare hereditary skin diseases are seen regularly in the clinics. Children with birthmarks receive laser treatment, as indicated, and minor surgical procedures are performed as needed.

The Division of Pediatric Dermatology is a teaching division with numerous trainees rotating through, including trainees from pediatrics, dermatology and family practice, as well as medical students in their third and fourth years of training.
