University of Alberta Residents Seeking Canadian Electives

An outgoing resident elective is any trainee who is currently enrolled in a University of Alberta Postgraduate Medical Education program and is planning to pursue an elective experience outside the University of Alberta as part of their postgraduate training. Rotation objectives must be clearly determined and appropriate evaluations obtained.

University of Alberta Residents Seeking International Electives

An outgoing resident elective is any trainee who is currently enrolled in a University of Alberta Postgraduate Medical Education program and is planning to pursue an elective experience outside the University of Alberta as part of their postgraduate training. Rotation objectives must be clearly determined and appropriate evaluations obtained.

Once you have determined where your elective will take place:

  • Fill out an outgoing elective registration form and return to the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education (PME) at least two full months prior to the start of your rotation.
  • Fill out any forms required by the receiving university.
  • Obtain a J-1 Visa if your elective is in the USA (see the Outgoing Elective Registration Form for more information).
  • International electives (outside of North America) usually require extensive paperwork by the receiving country.
  • Request a letter of good standing from your program director and any other forms required by the receiving university.
  • Ensure that all supplementary health care insurance is in place.
  • Once above steps have been completed a Certificate of Malpractice Insurance will be provided.

Canadian Residents Seeking a Pediatric Elective at the University of Alberta

​An incoming resident elective is a trainee who is enrolled in an accredited Postgraduate Medical Education Program at another institution and is coming to the University of Alberta to undertake a segment of their training. The training they receive at the University of Alberta is to be evaluated and counted towards their training program at their home institution.

A completed incoming elective registration form along with a letter from the resident's home program director must be returned to the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education (PME) at the University of Alberta at least three months prior to the start date of the elective (four months if a work permit is required).
