Undergraduate Electives

First and Second Year Student Shadowing - University of Alberta Students

  • Students need to contact the pediatric division’s administrator directly with three to five possible dates and times for their shadowing.
  • The administrator will check the clinic schedule, and will let the student know whether or not the shadowing has been granted, and, if so, where to go, when to be there and who to check in with.
  • Students are responsible to bring any forms that require completing/signing with them or submit prior to the date.
  • For more information visit Undergraduate Medical Education (UME).

Third and Fourth Year Student Electives - University of Alberta Student Electives

  • Students are to contact the program assistant in the Pediatric Medical Undergraduate Education office with all pediatric elective requests.
  • The Pediatric Education office will forward the requested elective date(s) to the pediatric division to determine if they have the space to accommodate the learner.
  • The Pediatric Education Office will contact the student regarding the status of the elective. If the elective has been approved, the student must complete a UME elective application and submit it to the Pediatric Education Office, who will forward this application to the division for completion/signature. The signed copy is to be returned to the program assistant who will send to UME.

Visiting Canadian Medical Student Elective Requests

  • Canadian students outside the University of Alberta send all pediatric elective requests through the visiting electives portal.
  • The electives coordinator will email elective requests to the Pediatric Education Office who will then forward to the requested division to determine if they have the space to accommodate the learner.
  • The division will notify the Pediatric Education Office if they are or are not able to accept the student during the requested time. The Pediatric Education Office will then notify the electives coordinator, who will contact the student via the visiting electives portal.
  • If the elective is approved, a confirmation notice from the visiting electives portal will be sent to the student and the Pediatrics Education Office.
  • Visiting students are not granted access to Netcare for any elective that is two weeks or less.

Medical Students from Outside Canada Elective Requests

Due to changes in policies and lack of availability of training positions at the University of Alberta, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is able to accept medical elective students studying at an LCME (Liason Committee on Medical Education) accredited medical school or where a bilateral exchange has been established.

International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA)
