Pediatric Hepatology Fellowship

The Pediatric Hepatology service at the University of Alberta/Stollery Children's Hospital provides specialized liver care to the children of Northern Alberta. The service frequently accepts consults from the northern regions of British Columbia, North West Territories and Saskatchewan. In addition, the Stollery Children's Hospital is the pediatric liver transplant program for the entire Western Canada region. The liver transplant program performs an average of 12 to 15 pediatric liver transplants and 80 adult liver transplants per year.

The Pediatric Hepatology service has a multi-disciplinary approach including dieticians, social workers, pharmacists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, pediatric hepatologists and liver transplant surgeons. Our centre is unique in providing follow-up neurodevelopmental assessments on survivors of complex therapies including liver and multi-visceral transplants.

The two year Pediatric Hepatology Fellowship program is positioned to enhance expertise in pediatric hepatology and liver transplantation. The applicant is expected to be a competent pediatric gastroenterologist and certifiable by their training body eg: RCPSC, AAP or RACP. Endoscopic skills are not a prerequisite (but preferred) for eligibility. This program is not accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The first year of Pediatric Hepatology training consists of 13 blocks of four-week rotations. While, the second year is dedicated to hepatology research. Fellows are encouraged to enrol in an advance degree/certification such as M.Sc. or PhD.
