Program Requirements

Course Work

The objective of the course work component in both the MSc and PhD programs is to ensure that the students have a broad background in pharmacology as a discipline and areas appropriate to their particular research interest.

MSc Program:
The minimum formal requirements are successful completion of one course from the following list: PMCOL 514, PMCOL 515, PMCOL 525, PMCOL550, PMCOL575 and PMCOL612. Substitution of other graduate-level courses is considered on an individual basis and must be approved by GSEC.

PhD Program:
The minimum formal requirements are successful completion of two courses from the following list: PMCOL 514, PMCOL 515, PMCOL 525, PMCOL550, PMCOL575 and PMCOL612. Substitution of other graduate-level courses is considered on an individual basis and must be approved by GSEC. Courses completed while students are registered for the MSc degree are credited towards meeting the requirements of the PhD program of those students who transfer.

Research Work

MSc Program:
Each student is expected to perform original research work under the direction of his/her supervisor(s), and the guidance of a Supervisory Committee. The work should be of significance and quality acceptable for publication in refereed scientific journals. A thesis shall be prepared, presented and defended in accordance with FGSR regulations.

PhD Program:
Students admitted to the PhD program are expected to engage in original research that creates significant new knowledge, and is of quality acceptable for publication in refereed scientific journals. Students must submit for acceptance a thesis proposal that outlines the intended course of their studies. University regulations require students of the PhD program to pass an oral candidacy examination, normally within 28 months of commencement of the program. A thesis shall be prepared, presented and defended in accordance with FGSR regulations.
