Graduate Scholarships, Awards, Bursaries and Funding

Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Scholarship competitions are held twice a year. Current eligible students will receive an email notifying them of the application deadline twice a year. The email will include with the scholarship information and application form.

The eligibility criteria is as follows:

  1. You must be continuing in a graduate degree program or have been recommended for admission to a graduate degree program in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Alberta to be considered in this competition.
  2. A first class academic standing (3.5 - 4.0 GPA) must be maintained and is considered “academic excellence”, as outlined in the eligibility criteria.
  3. Unless otherwise stated in the award description to take up an award, students must be registered full-time in a graduate degree program at the University of Alberta.  If you are registered as a part-time student at the time of application, you may apply, however, you must register full time to hold the award should you be nominated.  Students registered in THES 919 are considered full-time.
  4. Applicants registered in master’s programs normally are eligible to hold awards during the first two years of their program. The committee will only consider applications from a third year master’s student if there is a compelling explanation, outlined in a letter of support, from the department.  This letter would be in addition to any other required letters of reference.

Applicants registered in doctoral programs normally are eligible to hold awards only up to and including the fifth year of their program. Applications for funding for the sixth year will only be considered if accompanied by a compelling explanation in a letter of support from the department. This letter would be in addition to any other required letters of reference.

Travel Awards: Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Award Value: up to $1,000 per student/per degree

Eligibility Criteria:
The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Student Travel Award may be held only once in a degree program (either Master's or Doctoral).  This award is to support active participation at a major national or international conference and should be a highlight of the student's program.  The student must have completed their first year and be of good standing in their program before a request can be made.  The request must include proof of active participation in the conference and a letter of recommendation from the supervisor.

Award Information:

  • Students are eligible to apply for this travel award up to 30 days after the date of travel to the conference.
  • Acknowledgement of receipt of the Travel Award may be recorded on the student's poster or presentation slides.
  • Payment of the award will follow University of Alberta policy for travel expense requests, including submission of receipts to verify expenditures.
  • A travel advance may be requested to cover expenses (e.g., conference registration) prior to travel.  All such requests must follow University of Alberta policy for a travel advance.

Application Checklist:

Please provide the following information:

  1. Details of the conference (name, location, dates)
  2. Proof of active participation as:
    • Abstract Presenter:
      • copy of the abstract (with an indication that you are the presenting author)
      • letter from the conference organizers confirming acceptance of an abstract
    • Invited Speaker
      • Invitation from the conference organizers inviting you to either speak or participate in a panel discussion at the conference
  3. Letter of recommendation from the supervisor
