4.2 First Meeting with a Student


The first meeting between a supervisor and student should occur within the first month of the student’s program. Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research created a checklist of topics that can be used to guide the initial conversation with a new graduate student. The list of topics include: identification of key members of the faculty and staff within the Faculty; documents the graduate student should be aware of; registration requirements; academic requirements; role of the supervisor; funding; research collaboration; and thesis requirements. This checklist can also be used for record keeping purposes, with both the supervisor and the student retaining a signed copy for their files.
