2.1 Course Requirements

(University of Alberta Calendar - Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences [Graduate])

  • Course selection should be made in consultation with the supervisor and supervisory committee. The area of specialization and academic background of the student may also be considered when selecting specific courses for the student's program.
  • Students are required to complete Pharmacy 697 (described in Section 2.2).
  • For students admitted before September 2016, the required number of graduate level (500 or higher) courses are as follows (University of Alberta Calendar - Academic Regulations, Changes in Regulations):
    • MSc: A minimum of *12 (for example, four *3 graduate-level courses) is required.
    • PhD: Normally a minimum of *12 (for example, for *3 graduate-level courses) is required.
  • For students admitted in September 2016 or later, the required number of graduate level (500 or higher) courses are as follows:
    • MSc: A minimum of *6 (for example, two *3 graduate-level courses) is required. Students may be required to take additional courses depending on the area of specialization, their undergraduate background, and recommendations of the supervisor or supervisory committee.
    • PhD: Normally a minimum of *12 (for example, four *3 graduate-level courses) is required. If a previous graduate degree is held, the minimum course requirement may be reduced to *6 (for example, two *3 graduate-level courses) on approval of the Graduate Studies Committee. Approval will depend on a written recommendation from the supervisor and supervisory committee. This recommendation must include a brief description of the student's relevant academic background and justification for the reduction.
  • Students who wish to take additional courses to enhance their background to or develop expertise in additional research areas are encouraged to do so.
