In Memoriam- Guillermo (William) Barron

The Philosophy Department was saddened to learn of the death of Guillermo (William) Barron (Ph.D. 2001) on February 19, 2018 in Victoria, BC.

23 February 2018

Guillermo was the first student to be admitted to our Ph.D. program directly from the BA. After completing his dissertation under the supervision of Wes Cooper, Guillermo taught at Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific in Victoria, and then at Red Deer College (2002-2015). There he was beloved by his students, sending many on to further studies at the UofA. His pride in his students was demonstrated time and time and again by the care he showed for them as persons. His final act was to become an organ donor. Guillermo was also passionate about climbing and teaching, both of which he excelled at. He is survived by his spouse, Catherine Kappmeier, his stepson Ryan Kappmeier, as well as his siblings Elizabeth Hanson and Peter Barron.
There will be two get-togethers of faculty, former students, and friends in memory of Guillermo:
  • at Red Deer College's Farside Lounge (left inside the front doors), at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28.
  • at UofA's Room at the Top (Student Union Building, 7th floor), at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2 (hosted by the Undergraduate Philosophy Association)
