Background
My graduate work was focused on the use of prenatal exercise to promote cardiometabolic health in women diagnosed with, or at risk for gestational diabetes. This work led to the development of target heart rate zones for pregnant women which are included in current national and international guidelines for exercise. My postdoctoral fellowship investigated the impact of exercise on cerebrovascular function in older adults with a focus on post-menopausal women.


Research

My principal research interest is the investigation of maternal-fetal health outcomes, and an exploration of the preventative role of exercise and/or lifestyle interventions in the development of chronic disease.

My research program examines the role of physical activity (exercise and sedentary behaviour) during pregnancy and the postpartum period on maternal-fetal health. I am currently pursuing three areas of research:

  • Discovery biomedical research examining the underlying physiology of cardiometabolic health during pregnancy. This includes investigation of the impact of prenatal exercise/sedentary behaviour on cardiovascular, metabolic and autonomic nervous system adaptations to healthy pregnancy. 
  • Exercise interventions to prevent pregnancy complications and reduce maternal/fetal chronic disease risk.  
  • The translation of these findings to end users including the re-development of the SOGC/CSEP Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines for Exercise During Pregnancy.

Our Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and CFI-funded lab is equipped with state of the art tools for assessing maternal hemodynamics (e.g. peripheral and cerebral ultrasounds), neurovacular control (i.e. microneurography systems), and respiratory function. Our lab also includes a dedicated gym facilty for conducting exercise interventions and a biochemistry suite for biological sample collection and processing.
