The Department of Political Science is proud to announce that Dr. Isabel Altamirano- Jiménez has been named Canada Research Chair in Comparative Indigenous Feminist Studies (Tier II).

27 November 2017

Over the five years of her appointment Dr. Altamirano will undertake a collaborative research project exploring the effects of resource extraction and conservation initiatives on Indigenous communities. Although such initiatives have been promoted worldwide, international institutions such as the United Nations have expressed concerns over the negative impacts of these economic development schemes on Indigenous communities. Dr. Altamirano-'s transformative research program develops a distinctive theoretical approach for comparing how these impacts are felt and experienced by Indigenous women in Canada and Mexico. This research program seeks to facilitate dialogue and create forums for Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars, students, and community organizations to share ideas and co-produce knowledge that can inform policy and transnational relationships between the global north and south.
